Huntington Park is a small city located in Los Angeles County. At the time of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 57,285, which was down from 61,297 at the time of the 2000 census.
Named for prominent industrialist Henry Huntington, Huntington Park was officially incorporated in 1906 as a side suburb for workers in the rapidly expanding industries to the southeast of downtown L.A. To this day, around 31 percent of the city’s residents work at factories in nearby Vernon and Commerce.
Also according to the 2010 Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles, all of it land. Cities surrounding Huntington Park include Cudahy, Bell, Los Angeles, South Gate, Vernon, and Maywood. In addition to unincorporated areas, including Walnut Park, are adjacent to Huntington Park. Huntington Park has a population density of 19,302 people per square mile.
The racial breakdown of Huntington Park 50 percent Caucasian, 1 percent African American, 1 percent Native American, 1 percent Asian, 0.1 percent Pacific Islander, with 43 percent being from other races, and four percent being from two or more races. Hispanics or Latino of any race make up 97 percent of Huntington Park’s residences. Today, Pacific Boulevard is a successful commercial strip, serving once again as a large retail center for working-class residents of southeastern Los Angeles County.
Bus services are provided by both the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and Huntington Park’s own bus service. Most residents are zoned into Huntington Park High School. Although some residents of Huntington Park are zoned to Bell High School in Bell, and some areas are jointly zoned to both schools.
Any student who lives in the Bell or Huntington Park zones may apply to Maywood Academy High School in Maywood; Maywood Academy, which opened in 2005 and moved into its permanent campus in 2006, does not have its own attendance boundary because it lacks American football, track and field, or any specific sports facilities.
